There is a right and wrong way to recycle. Most people who “live green” recycle and know that this leads to many financial, environmental and social benefits, but only a small part is aware of how to do it properly. Incorrect recycling can result in impurities which can degrade the quality of the recycled material. The good news is that proper recycling does not require much effort.
Here are some tips:
1. Remove the caps of disposable bottles.
They cannot be recycled. When they come into the waste processing plant, bottles that still have caps are thrown away instead of being recycled because the workers would lose too much time in removing the caps.
Recycling is more effective if items handed over are pre-washed. Do not overdo it, just rinse the dishes and remove the paper labels from the glass or plastic bottles.
3. Check the type of plastic.
Check what type of plastic can be recycled in your local waste treatment plant. There are different types of plastic and not all of them can be recycled. Check the number in the recycling symbol on the product, and only deliver plastic that can be recycled. One of the easiest recyclable types of plastic is polyethylene terephthalate, which serves to make plastic bottles for water and other beverages. Once recycled, it is used for wadding for winter jackets and sleeping bags, automotive parts, boats and, of course, other plastic bottles. Mixed plastics are the most difficult to recycle. After mechanical recycling, they can be used for roof constructions, cable covers, household furniture and more.
4. Do not throw plastic bags in the recycling containers.
Instead, check if there is a supermarket in your neighborhood that collects and recycles them. You’d better get a reusable canvas bag.
5. Be careful with the paper.
Paper that has passed through a shredder has a shorter length of paper fibers, which means it can not be used for quality recycled products. Do not give for recycling too brightly colored paper, as well as wax paper or cadaver. Old notebooks or printer paper are recycled most efficiently. Do not remove the transparent nylon parts of the envelopes, they do not interfere with recycling.
To reduce environmental pollution, you can reduce the use of products containing toxic substances and replace them with biodegradable cleansers and cosmetics. Also organic waste can be composted and used as a fertilizer in the garden. The possibility of ordering smaller portions in restaurants will reduce organic waste.
What more can we do?
Recycling should be supported by measures that will generally reduce waste, for example:
- Use of reusable utensils (glass and porcelain cups, glass bottles, soap / shampoo dispensers instead of single items, etc.);
- Use of rechargeable batteries;
- Reduce the number of paper used in everyday life.
One of the fastest and most successful processes of environmental protection and sustainable management of urban territories is recycling. It saves resources and energy, reduces pollution and solves some of the waste disposal problems. Recycling is the basis of the green lifestyle and must become a priority for every person, every production and every settlement that strives for sustainability. Paper, glass, and plastic are among the most common recyclable waste. The benefits of recycling are a lot, as long as we learn to recycle properly.
