What is compost?
It is often though that compost and fertilizer is one and the same thing. No, they are not. Compost feeds the soil, while fertilizer feeds the plant. Compost is produced of the decaying of organic products like food and green waste. These materials break down into humus after a few weeks. Modern composting is a faster process that includes different steps of watering, airing the materials, also this process is aided by worms and fungi which break up the material further. Compost is very rich of nutrients. It is used in gardens, landscaping, agriculture. You can easily make compost at home and depending on the material that you use the compost will be different.
Now we will pay more detailed attention to food and garden waste composting.
Composting food waste is easy and does not take much time. We usually do not realize it, but domestic waste is 40 percent organic waste. It can easily become recycled and reusable. We actually can grow food out of waste. It is ecofriendly, cheap and healthy. Here is some advice how to produce homemade compost instead of searching for food disposal services.
One of the easiest ways is worm composting. It is in fact a very clean way to transform waste into compost. You do not need much room for that, neither it takes time. You need a bin, and of course, worms. What you have to do is put layers of food leftovers into the bin and the worms will consume the waste. Have in mind that worms actually eat up to half of their body weight a day! Only in a few months you will have rich compost.
Before starting the homemade composting, do ask the local council if you can do it. In some countries the municipalities are not very into homemade composting because it may attract opossums, rats or other vermin.
There are certain leftovers that you can recycle by composting, while others are not proper. Do compost all kind of fruit and vegetable waste, grains, old bread, tea bags and coffee, egg shells. Do not compost meat waste, fish, dairy products because they imbalance the nutrient structure of the other products, as well as they attract animals.
Garden waste composting
Garden waste composting is even easier. If you have a garden, there is more than enough material that you can use. Before preparing a garden waste removal, think about composting it. The easiest way is to pile up the leaves and other garden waste in a corner and turn the pile from time to time. When choosing the best place for your compost pile in the garden choose one that is shaded, so that the material does not dry. The drainage is also important, so keep that in mind as well. The composting process will take between 4 to 6 months. To speed up the start of the process you can use “activators” which most commonly are comfrey leaves, grass clippings, young weeds, well-rotted chicken manure.
Sometimes not very pleasant odors can appear from the piles of compost. If that happens, especially if you are in an urban area having neighbours next door, follow two easy steps to get rid of the odor. Do not put any meat waste in the pile, and cover the pile with dry grass. You could also add some lime or calcium to neutralize the bad smell.
